As you step back from the forge, still feeling the heat and with sparks in your hair, you notice your hardy tools are looking a bit worn. Which ones will you sharpen first, and what makes them your priority?
I typically begin with the fuller. Once it wears down, my shoulders can feel it immediately. A quick touch-up helps distribute the material better and keeps me from straining both the steel and myself.
After dealing with hot steel all morning, I always sharpen the hot cut first. A dull edge can ruin everything. A clean cut minimizes effort, maintains heat, and makes the forging process so much smoother.
Definitely the hot cut. It endures the toughest blows and takes a lot of abuse. If that edge isn’t spot on, working at the anvil just doesn’t feel right.
