Fixing low forge temp when using coal or coke

After firing up the forge and still not feeling that intense heat, you might start to wonder what’s going wrong. Let’s dive into some fuel swaps, airflow adjustments, and tried-and-true solutions to get that fire blazing hot again without burning through your coal or your patience.
 
Had an experience last week while shaping some brackets where the fire just wouldn’t cooperate.
After swapping in fresh coal and adjusting the blower, the forge really came to life.
It’s amazing how small changes can make such a big impact when you’re trying to get the heat just right.
 
After hammering away for most of the morning, my forge just wasn’t behaving. I tried a different fuel and played with the airflow, and before long, it was hot enough to send sparks flying. There’s nothing quite like that moment when the forge finally fires up the way you need it to.
 
I recall starting up my forge for a knife batch and feeling more like I had warm air than molten heat. It turned out the air supply was too low and the coal too old. Once I made those adjustments, the fire burst back to life. Definitely a lesson learned
 
from my experience, sometimes more air isn't the answer, it’s the speed of the air. if you blast a coal fire too hard, you’re just blowing the heat out the top before it can soak into the metal. Try a low and steady blast and make sure your fire is deep enough

you want the oxygen to be completely consumed by the fuel before it touches your workpiece, otherwise you’re just scaling
