I have numerous old square nuts I have saved. I discovered that if you heat them and pound them flat, they make really nice decorative washers. You can chisel lines in them or file the edges to give them a scalloped look all around. That big hanger washer in the pic, I forged down 8 of those as tapered decorative washers for the heavy maple anvil stand I made. There is a piece of 3/8's threaded rod holding the stand together with those forged square washers and nuts. Turned out well.
