Troubleshooting electrical issues in induction or electric forges

My induction forge has been acting up lately, sometimes it fires up just fine, but other times it trips the breaker or just sits there humming angrily without actually heating. It could be a power supply issue, a problem with the coil, or maybe the controller is having a moment. What’s your go-to diagnostic process for hunting down those pesky electrical gremlins before something expensive goes up in smoke?
 
Start by checking the size of your breaker, induction forges draw a lot of power, and if the breaker is too small, it’ll trip all the time. Look at the coil connections for any looseness or corrosion. If you hear an angry hum but it’s not heating, the coil might not be properly connected or there could be a short in the work coil itself that’s affecting efficiency.
 
If you can, test the capacitor bank, failed capacitors can cause those symptoms.
Also, check all power connections for signs of heat damage or burnt smells.
Loose connections create resistance, leading to heat buildup and potentially catastrophic failures.
 
Controller issues often show up as error codes, take a look at the display for diagnostics. Make sure your water cooling system is working properly; overheating protection will kick in to prevent damage. Intermittent issues usually come back to thermal cutoffs tripping due to poor cooling or clogged lines cutting off flow completely.
 
Check the voltage at the forge when it’s acting up, brownouts or voltage drops can cause strange behavior. Also, examine the coil for cracks or separation in the tubing, damaged coils can short out and hum without heating anything.
