Welding and joining salvaged metal before forging

I've been diving into some blacksmithing projects using salvaged metal, and I'm curious, what are the best welding or joining techniques to use before I start forging? I'd love to hear any tips, tricks, or lessons you've picked up along the way

I've found that using MIG tack welds before forging works pretty well. It keeps everything lined up, and it doesn't really get in the way when I'm hammering.
