Been doing my own research and ive learn these so far. there has been discussions going on about 1018 vs the astm a36, i just want to review the facts. feel free to add some and give insights and thoughts. so lets start with the a36 mild steel, it is the most common hot rolled steel you can find and since its hot rolled the surface is rough and it comes in different beams and shapes. It bends easier than the 1018 meaning its weaker. its harder to machine therefore its usually much cheaper.

The alloy 1018 on the other hand is the most common cold rolled steel and is typically found in rods and bars. known as a good all around steel balancing strength and flexibility and machinability as well. compared to the a36 cold rolling means it has a smoother surface and improved characteristics.

seems like A36 is the go-to for cost and versatility while 1018 steps in when precision and finish are key, kind of like the difference between a multitool and a specialty blade, just depends on whether you need raw strength or smooth performance.
 
Excellent analysis,you got it right. When it comes to jobs that need precision machining or where the finish is important,I tend to choose 1018. On the other hand,for fabrication and structural work, A36 is my go-to choice. Ultimately,it all depends on the specific needs of the job at hand.
 
You've got the basics down, but here's the thing, A36 is cheap and easy to work with, but 1018 offers better strength and machinability. for flexibility in work and durability, 1018 is the clear winner
 
Appreciate everyone, for the breakdown! Has anyone seen A36 beat 1018 in a surprise situation? I'm curious if the cheaper choice ever came out on top.
 
I've experienced something similar before. We were working on a bracket for a farm trailer and, just out of convenience, we picked up some A36 since we had it nearby. It turned out to handle the load and stress a lot better than we anticipated, even outlasting a similar part we'd made with 1018 for a different setup. I'm not claiming it's superior, but sometimes, in the right circumstances, it can really surprise you.
 
Several things contribute to the increased strength of cold-rolled metal, but the most important one is a process called strain hardening. This happens because cold rolling permanently deforms the metal's internal structure. It creates more defects, or dislocations, in the metal's crystal lattice, making it much harder for the material to bend or deform further. This makes the metal stronger and less flexible. Simply put, squeezing the metal when it's cold makes it tougher
 
For frame welding or general builds, A36 steel is the better value. But when you're lathing parts and need things precise and polished, spend a bit more on 1018 steel, it's worth it.
