Best hammer types for different tasks

When you're at the forge or tackling a project, the type of hammer you choose can really change the game. Some people are die-hard fans of the cross peen for shaping, while others swear by the rounding hammer for its versatility. And then there are those who stick with the tried-and-true ball peen.

What about you? Which hammer do you prefer, and what makes it your go-to choice?

I used to work with heavy machines, and I got a rounding hammer to fix small stuff. I still got that tool for blacksmithing. I love how many things I can do with it from drawing out steel to cleaning curves, it feels like an old friend when I'm using it.

When I started blacksmithing, I just got a cheap cross peen hammer from the local hardware store. It helped me learn how to control my strikes, and now it's the hammer I always grab to shape edges.

for me, the most essential hammers to get as a beginner (on a budget) was a cross peen and a ball peen. they're under 20 dollars each. rounding hammers and dog head hammers are great but expensive and not entirely necessary for newbie projects
