blacksmithing and beards

I’ve noticed a lot of us tend to grow beard once we start hitting the anvil
aside from looking like a fantasy dwarf or a Viking, is there an actual smith reason for it?
I heard some guys say beards actually catch flying scale before it hits your skin, but that sounds like a fire hazard waiting to happen haha
What’s the verdict. are you bearded, or do you prefer the clean shaven look?

I grew a beard when I really got into forging. At first, I was just lazy, but now I think it helps catch sparks I keep a brush close, just in case.

I've tried it both ways: beard for looks and catching sparks, shave for safety and being neat.
Truthfully, the beard makes me feel like a real Viking.
But a spark could end it quick if I'm not careful.

Started shaving, but grew a beard after a few years at the anvil. I can't proof it protects me, but I like the warmth and it looks cool when I'm working. As for sparks? That's just part of the game

For most of my many years at the anvil I have had a beard. I think it was more protective than a safety hazard.
