You pull a blade from the forge, dip it in the oil, and it just sits there like it’s relaxing in a hot bath.
We’ve all been there, right? Let’s trade some quick checks, oil tweaks,
and practical shop-floor tricks to ensure your quench is doing its job properly.
 
When the quench takes its time, oil temp is often to blame. It should hover around 120-130°F for most oils. If it’s too hot, it won’t cool the steel fast enough. I always keep a thermometer in the tank to monitor it.
 
Make sure to move the blade around while quenching don’t just drop it in and leave it. Agitation helps break up vapor bubbles, allowing fresh oil to contact the steel. This really improves the hardness outcomes.
 
Contaminated oil loses its ability to quench effectively over time. If your oil's been sitting for years or has water in it, it’s no good. Fresh oil is a small price to pay to avoid ruining blades. Plus, test with a spare piece first if you’re uncertain about your setup
