Favorite historical winter tools any cold-weather blacksmith gear?

I was looking into historical winter trades and got interested in what blacksmiths relied on in colder areas. Were there certain tools or designs created specifically for freezing temperatures? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

I saw this museum display once that was all about winter smithing in the boonies. The display mention Handles were made thicker and tongs were made sturdier since metal cooled off so quickly. It really drove home how much the climate could mess with even the tiniest design choices.

When I first got interested in smithing history, I was shocked by how much winter changed things. Some shops would switch gears to making ice tools and fixing up sleds, so you saw a real change in designs depending on the season. The cold weather really pushed them to come up with some smart fixes.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing last year when I was reading up on those old northern smiths. From what I could tell, they went with heavier tools and kept the shapes simple so they could keep their gloves on. Makes total sense when you think about trying to work a forge in the dead of winter.
