I just moved to a new house and want to set up a DIY forge in my garage, but I’ve hit a weird snag. when I fire it up, the air smells... off. like toxic spicy sauce?
I’m also getting lightheaded if I’m in there too long. I’m stoked to start banging on some steel, but I’d rather not get carbon monoxide poisoning
how do I fix the airflow? is a basic fan enough, or do I need a real vent setup?

I had a similar experience when I set up my first forge in a rental garage. I thought a box fan would solve all my problems, but it really didn’t help at all. As soon as I installed some proper ventilation and cracked the door open, that strange smell and those pesky headaches vanished quickly. It's definitely something you want to get right before you start working.

I faced that same issue in my old workshop. I felt lightheaded after just a few minutes, and I didn't think much of it until a friend pointed out that the ventilation was terrible. Just having a fan wasn’t sufficient for me. Once I set up a proper exhaust system, everything felt way safer and much more comfortable to work in.

Then, when I moved into my current place, I tried using a propane forge in the garage and ran into that same "spicy chemical" smell again. The airflow was awful. A simple fan provided some relief, but it was the vent hood that made the most significant difference. It's important to pay attention to the warning signs your body gives you.
