Getting your forge temp just right

You’re at the anvil, and the metal isn’t acting as it should, too hot here, too cool there. What straightforward tricks, gauges, or practices do you have to help you keep your forge steady for those consistent results?

Pay close attention to the color, cherry red is ideal for most forging, while orange is for welding heat.
Keep your coal bed depth and airflow consistent, fluctuating fuel or air will cause temperature issues.
Once you pinpoint the right settings, stick with them throughout the project.

If you’re serious about maintaining consistency, use a pyrometer, it takes away all the guesswork.
Make sure to manage your fire well by cleaning out clinkers regularly and adding fresh fuel to avoid dead spots that create uneven heating.

I keep a reference piece in the fire, when it hits the right color, I know everything else is almost there.
Also, remember to rotate your work, leaving it in one spot guarantees you'll end up with hot and cold sides every time.
