Hammer and tong maintenance

Hey, how often do you sharpen your hammer and tongs? Dull tools can mess up your work. I'm trying to find some good ways to keep them in shape. What works for you?

Tongs typically only require a bit of maintenance at the jaws now and then using a file or flap disc, since sharp edges can damage hot stock. As for hammers, I like to reface and polish the striking surface every few months with a belt grinder. This helps ensure a clean impact and prevents the head from mushrooming.

After using my tongs I brush them with a wire brush to take off any soot they collected during the day. At the end of the season, I'll wipe down the hammers with oil to prevent any over the winter rust and put a dab of Johnson's paste wax on the tong rivets and melt it in so they stay lubed and ready to use the next year.

I’d also recommend checking the hammer handles for a tight fit and for any cracks. Also be mindful of the tongs’ alignment, warped reins can definitely affect your grip and control.
