I scored an 8-foot length of 1/8-inch flat stock from work for free. Thinking sword, maybe knife but is it too thin for a full blade? I'm new to smithing, so I'm open to beginner-friendly project ideas.

Nice, congratulations on the free steel, and that's actually a lot to play with!
That's definitely too thin for a sword, but you could make a few small knives out of it!
Just be aware they'll be more for slicing or utility rather than heavy-duty chopping.
The thickness is also great for making tools for your shop like a forge rake, tongs, or even some small punches.
Good luck and have fun with it!
I'd be keen to see what you'd make out of that!

Yep, a few small knives is the way to go! Have you tried forging a simple utility knife yet? Good starter project to learn bevels and shaping.
