You fire up the forge and realize the heat isn’t quite holding like it used to. Before you go cranking up the fuel, what quick tips, checks, or simple tricks do you have to ensure your firebrick and refractory linings stay tight and efficient?
 
Keep an eye on the firebrick for cracks every so often. Little cracks can quickly turn into big heat leaks. I fix mine with refractory cement as soon as I see them, it's much cheaper than having to replace entire sections later when they fall apart.
 
Give your bricks a tap, if they sound hollow, it means they're breaking down inside. Check for surface flaking too. If you catch it early, a coat of ITC-100 can help them last longer.
 
Keep the joints between your bricks tight. Gaps let a ton of heat escape. I redo mine with special mortar every year. Also, try not to shock the bricks with extreme temps, heating and cooling slowly prevents cracks better than blasting them with heat right away.
 
Give your firebricks a tap and listen for that hollow sound, it's a sign they might be crumbling due to thermal cycling. Also, check the joints for any gaps; that's where heat can escape. I repoint mine every year with high-temp mortar, and it keeps everything sealed tight and running efficiently.
 
To avoid thermal shock, always heat and cool your setup gradually, it's the quickest way to ruin your bricks.
Also, consider applying ITC-100 or a similar coating. It adds a reflective layer that bounces heat back,
protecting the bricks from the direct flames over time. Honestly, it's worth every penny.
 
Keep an eye out for cracks or spalling on the surface. Those small cracks can escalate quickly into bigger issues. If you catch them early, patching with refractory cement can save you from having to replace entire sections down the line.
