I'm new to blacksmithing here in Missouri and working on simple tools like tongs. I've been using scrap metal, but I'm running out and need some cheap mild steel. It can be flat bar or round stock. I don't need anything fancy, just strong enough to practice with.

Does anyone know good places to find steel that's not too expensive? Maybe junkyards, websites, or local shops you've used? Thanks a lot!

Try hitting up local scrapyards or welding shops. They usually sell leftover pieces for cheap. Online, check out Blacksmiths Depot or eBay sellers, they often have used A36 mild steel that's perfect for practicing.

Metal Supermarkets in St. Louis, they cut to size and no minimum order. Scrap yards like Ozark Mountain Steel or Fusselman Salvage can be great too

Aside from scrapyards, I use a local welder for mild steel. He already has a steel supplier & will put in custom orders for me.
