So my dad took me to his father's old workshop, told me I can take anything that interests me for a home project. I found a few old cargo chains (grade 70, grade 43 I think) and thought I can make a mailbox out of it.. I've always wanted our front yard to have that rustic industrial look

Has anyone done a similar thing? The idea is to weld some plates at the bottom to make it stand. Otherwise, I might need to hang the mailbox instead..

To start, which is the better chain to use?

oh wow, that's cool. foremost, you should do a spark test for both just for you to actually see what you're working with. if you're hanging the mailbox then both chains might do. it costs much, but it's per foot as far as I know now by pound just in case you run out. grade 43 is softer isn't it? it would do well for the welded mailbox stand.

totally digging the rustic industrial vibe, loll I'd go with the grade 70 chain for better shape and handling more weight, it's tougher than grade 43 and yeah also, hanging it might make it swing around a bit more than you'd like but it'll still do fine

I wager every most persons would go with the grade 70 for the stand since it's stronger, but grade 43 might be easier if you're hanging it. Either way, it'll look great

How was it? Been almost a month. Which grade did you pick?
