You might have that rush of enthusiasm, but it’s common to dive in without a solid plan. Perhaps you’ve skipped a few steps or learned some tough lessons about materials and finishing along the way.

If someone is about to start their first project, what step-by-step tips would you recommend? And what mistakes should they avoid?

I messed up my first workbench by not sanding well, and the finish came off fast. So, pro tip, plan each step, mainly the prep work, before starting anything.

Screwed up my first knife project by rushing the heat thing and ruined the blade. Now, I've learned to take my time and follow instructions closely. Never skip the final touches.

I once started a shelf with zero planning, just excitement. Ended up cutting the boards wrong and wasting stuff. Now, I always measure twice, make a simple plan, and stay calm.
