Newbie with a hammer

I'm new to blacksmithing, just a borrowed hammer and lots of excitement. Been reading and planning some small projects. What tools would you suggest I get as a newbie? Thanks for any tips!

Honestly, you don't need much to start. A solid anvil substitute (railroad track, big chunk of steel), tongs, and a forge (even a brake drum with coal or propane burner) will get you hammering. Build up tools as you learn what you're missing.

You will also need a quench bucket for cooling and some basic safety gear like gloves and eye protection.
