Ugh, I totally get that mess. Last year after December craziness, I had the same problem. What I did was sort everything into three piles: stuff I'd use soon, stuff I might use, and stuff I couldn't believe I still owned. Seriously, it made starting new stuff so much easier.

I used to just throw all my leftover metal bits in a corner until it was a huge mountain. Now, I have a little rack for the good stuff and I trash the rest ASAP. My workspace feels way less crazy now that the busy time is coming up.
