powered trip hammer any good?

Been obsessing with power hammers and im thinking of building one. my only problem is most i see use a toggle thats being used as the connection between the motor and the hammer. though Ive been thinking wouldnt a trip mechanism be a much simpler and ideal? at least to me. lastly, is it still practical or am I too loose too much.
 
yeah if you take a look at trip hammers youre gonna see that the removable heads and anvils let you swap them for different dies. trip is more simple yeah and ideal to me because it's more versatile. but the modern power hammers yes they have strengths... it's just that maybe im biased with the whole trip hammer thing.
 
Totally get the obsession, trip hammers can work fine, especially if you're not after high precision. They're simpler than toggle setups and still get the job done, you might lose a bit of control or efficiency, but nothing major if it's built right.

If you're after precision and adjustability, especially for forging, a toggle-style hammer is probably more practical. Trip hammers don't usually offer the control and power of a toggle hammer.

Trip style hammers are very practical. They're perfect for learning and experimenting, and a good start point if you're planning to scale up later on. What they all said here is true and trips are also simpler to fabricate.
 
One disadvantage could be that you wont be able to adjust the force and the distance of the strike, its made to do one operation or a fixed production of an item.
 
Sorry for jumping in late. That's a great analogy, it's like having a hammer that can only do one specific dance move. It gets the job done, but it lacks versatility
 
A power hammer replaces a human striker (the new guy). You can also make a "peddle" hammer that hits when you stomp on it.. you can get a 10-15# hammer at farm stores to use for either or weld a pipe onto a section of railroad rail and go from there.. by the time you get something rigged up you will have lots of ideas about the next one. Should be able to pretty easily adjust things trip-wise for rate and strength of the strike.. anyway, have fun, its worth the effort.. 😃
