Tempering cycles should you choose a single long soak or multiple short runs?

With your forge heated up, steel ready, and your patience running thin, what’s your go-to method? Do you prefer one extended soak, or do you find it better to break it into shorter runs? Share your insights on how this choice has impacted hardness, grain, and timing.

Used to soak the metal for too long and burned some pieces.
Now, I do shorter soaks.
It gives me more control and keeps the metal in good shape

I tried long soaks to speed things up, but the hardness was not even. Now, I do shorter cycles and check the temp all the time. It feels like I'm working with the metal.

Short runs are the only way to go. Long soaks stress me out. The metal seems better when I treat it in short bursts, and the hardness is steady. The timing is easy, too.
