Over the years, you’ve probably tried a myriad of techniques some were effective, while others fell flat. Eventually, you found that one method that you keep returning to without even thinking about it. So, what’s the sharpening or heat-treating approach you trust these days?

Over the years, I’ve tried all sorts of sharpening tools, but I always come back to a simple whetstone. It’s quiet, straightforward, and delivers solid results every time.

I went through a phase where I was all about fancy jigs and those so-called “miracle” sharpeners, but honestly, a basic oil-stone and slow, steady strokes have never failed me. Now, it’s such a routine that I don’t even think about it anymore — it’s all muscle memory.

I’ve experimented with everything from cheap grinders to complex heat-treat methods, and most of that just complicated things unnecessarily. Nowadays, I rely on a controlled oil quench and a quick temper cycle in the shop oven. It’s predictable, easy to replicate, and keeps me from the headaches I used to face searching for “better” techniques.
