Tips for forging carbon steel decorative elements

You’re standing at the anvil, sparks flying all around, working to transform plain steel into something truly beautiful. What techniques, heat methods, or finishing touches do you rely on to create carbon steel decorative pieces that are not only strong but also visually stunning?

The first time I rushed through a heat, I ended up cracking a leaf right at the stem. Definitely learned my lesson! Now, I work at a bright orange color, normalize before finishing and use a wire brush while it's hot to add some texture. A light oil quench, followed by beeswax and a final polish gives it strength and that gorgeous deep glow.

One late-night forge session led to my best piece yet and that’s because I stopped trying to make everything perfect.
I use controlled heats, precise hammer strikes, and allow the scale to tell its own story.
Then I normalize wire-brush, oil, and finish with wax.

After I accidentally burned the edges off a scroll years back, I really slowed things down. Focus on even heat, clean fires, and do plenty of brushing between heats. I forge in the texture, normalize, and seal with either wax or oil.
