After a long day of forging, it’s easy to feel exhausted and just want to leave. But taking the time to shut down properly is important. What steps do you take to let things cool down, clear out any scale, and ensure the shop stays safe?

I make it a point to slow down at the end of my work, first I turn off the forge, then I take a moment to rake the scale while everything cools down. I learned that lesson the hard way after discovering a smoldering pile once. Taking those extra five minutes to clean up is definitely worth it to avoid any nasty surprises later on.

I shut everything down turn off the propane and I won’t leave until I can safely rest my hand near the forge without feeling anxious.
I sweep up the scale dunk any hot scraps and double-check everything.
No matter how tired I am sticking to this routine keeps both the shop and my nerves in check.

My end-of-day routine goes like this, I kill the forge, open the doors, sweep up the scale, and make sure to place the hot steel somewhere obvious. There’s no grand story behind it, just pure muscle memory. When you’re completely worn out, those habits become way more important than any motivation you might have.
