Best steel types for beginner bladesmithing

I’m just starting out with making knives and small tools. Which types of steel are the easiest to work with when it comes to heat treatment and forging?

For beginners, 1095 and 5160 steels are good choices since they're easy to work with, heat treat predictably, and hold an edge well. O1 steel is also a decent option if you plan to oil quench and want a fine grain.

Also, you could check out 1084 steel. It's pretty easy to heat treat and forge. Quenching and tempering work great with it too.

They made car and truck leaf springs out of 5160 in the 1950s and 60s.

Any steel 1075 to 1084 are perfect for bladesmthiing. It has a forging window that isn't too critical like some of he higher end alloy steels.

That's a great choice. 1075 to 1084 steel offers a sweet spot when it comes to strength and heat treating. It's perfect for learning since you don't have to stress too much about getting the temp exactly right.
