Fixed my anvil stump

I have a stump I am planning to chisel out a hole in the center for the post at the bottom of my 18th century stake anvil. I discovered a couple days ago that the stump has started to split. Yesterday I forged a couple of iron 'girdles' that were then bolted tightly around the stump to stop any more splitting. Now I can continue with the mounting of the stake anvil without any more stump splitting issues.

I had the same problem with a split stump when setting up a hardy tool. I used old wagon tire rings to hold it tight. Your iron bands sound like a better fix. They should keep everything strong, even with the post pushing down.
