Getting your mechanical hammer to strike evenly

I've been making progress on a project when suddenly my mechanical hammer starts hitting inconsistently, messing up my flow.

What's your approach for identifying misalignment, timing problems, or worn components before they ruin the workpiece?

Keep a close eye on the ram's travel path during slow cycles. Any wobbling or deviation signals that the guides might need adjustment or replacement. Check the timing by marking the cycle, it should repeat perfectly every time without any variation.

Always test with scrap first if something seems off. Mark your target depth and see if it hits consistently. If it doesn’t, tighten all bolts, check for worn bearings, and ensure everything in the drivetrain is secure. It’s better to troubleshoot on scrap than to damage your actual project piece.

Make sure to check the ram alignment right away, hits that aren't centered can indicate worn guides or loose mounts. Also, take a look at the linkage for any play at the pivot points. Inconsistent hits can waste material quickly, so address it now to prevent further damage. Don’t forget to check the spring tension too, weak springs can lead to unpredictable performance.
