Rust

Hi

My daddy was a 17th/18th Century style blacksmith meaning everything he did was done the old way. Nothing automated or fabricated . I have one of his pieces outside. It’s 25 years old and hasn’t had any maintenance done in 20 years. I’m currently removing the Rust. My question is after wire brushing everything how clean does the iron need to be before I paint? Also, I purchased some Rustoleum Rust Remover Jelly. Does anyone have an opinion on that!?

Any tips appreciated.

First off, that's a beautiful piece and a wonderful way to honor your father's work. If it's been outdoors for 25 years and is still in good shape, he clearly knew his craft.

You don't necessarily need to get every bit of staining off. The goal is to remove all loose rust, scale, dirt and anything that could prevent paint from bonding. Once you've wire brushed it thoroughly, wipe it down clean and make sure it's dry before priming and painting. The Rustoleum Rust Remover Jelly should help with stubborn rust spots and detailed areas around the dragon.

I'd also recommend a quality rust-inhibiting primer before the topcoat. A little extra prep now will help preserve it for many more years.
