Rail spikes are a great option for those just starting out. They're durable, widely available, and ideal for picking up the basics. Just steer clear of cast iron, it's tricky to handle and can break easily.

I'd say the best starter material is leaf springs from junkyards.
They're high-carbon, tough, and great for knives and punches.
Railroad spikes are popular but are low-carbon, only suitable for hooks and decor, and not good edge tools.
